This gentleman’s name is Keith Springer, according to Wikimedia. I found this photo, but nothing else about him. Do you ever think about the Keith Springers of the world? The individuals that you see, in passing, or preserved, smiling and well-dressed, in stock photos that you will never know? Under that blue striped tie is an individual who has loved, lost, and lived a life as complex as yours, and now, here we are, using his image as an example of our literal most generic client ever. I mean, look at the guy. You know that he has to be into philanthropy, or entrepreneurship, or philanthropic entrepreneurship.

Keith Springer may be into any or all of these things, but we can’t know for sure. Of course, in all of his unremarkable glory, we fail to consider his little sister that he loves very much but hasn’t seen in years. We don’t know about his struggles with bipolar disorder, his past relationships, or the fact that, on certain days, he enjoys sitting outside and just listening to the sounds around him. He did it when he grew up in rural Missouri, where the wheat fields would make an ever-so-slight rustling, and he does it now that he lives in New York. The sounds have changed, and so has Keith. He is never quite sure if he will feel the same way as he did as a child. Even on the occasions when he returns to Missouri to visit his in-laws, the rustling does not calm him as it once did. He wonders why this is.

We are all Keith Springer to someone else. We are all searching for something that hasn’t existed for years, but at the same time, we have grown tolerant, or even used to, the things we experience now. We are a collection of stereotypes belying individuals stuck with the hopes and dreams of wheat fields and a little sister who now lives in Peru. We’re proud of her. She’s a nurse, and we know that she’s helping people, but we can’t help but wonder if she thinks about us to the same extent that we think about her. Sometimes, we call her, but putting feeling to word is inelegant, and after some small talk, we sit back, in our expensive New York apartment, and listen to the cars trundling by outside.
